Terms of Service
Simple rules for a relationship built on trust.
Chronicle is a place to preserve your family's most precious stories. These terms exist to protect both you and us — written as clearly as we can manage.
Last updated: April 2025
The short version
Nobody reads terms of service. We get it. Here's the honest summary:
- You own your family's content — always.
- We're a paid subscription service. Cancel any time, no games.
- Don't use Chronicle to harm others or break the law.
- We work hard to keep your data safe, but no system is perfect.
- If something changes materially, we'll email you first.
These terms are our mutual agreement. The full details follow if you want them.
Acceptance of terms
By creating an account or using Chronicle in any way, you agree to these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use Chronicle.
You must be at least 13 years old to use Chronicle. If you are under 18, you represent that a parent or guardian has reviewed and agreed to these terms on your behalf.
These terms form a binding agreement between you and Chronicle ("we," "us," or "our"). When we say "Chronicle," we mean the service available at thechronicles.life and its associated mobile apps, if any.
Your account
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials. Any activity that occurs under your account is your responsibility.
Please use a strong, unique password. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at hello@thechronicles.life.
You may not create more than one account per person, transfer your account to another person, or impersonate others when using Chronicle.
Subscriptions & billing
Chronicle is a subscription service. By subscribing, you authorize us to charge your payment method on a recurring basis (monthly or annually, depending on your plan) until you cancel.
Cancellation: You may cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period — you keep full access until then. We do not offer prorated refunds for partial billing periods, except where required by applicable law.
Free trials: If we offer a free trial, we may require a payment method upfront. You will be charged at the end of the trial period unless you cancel before it ends.
Price changes: If we change our pricing, we will give you at least 30 days' notice by email before the new price takes effect on your account.
Your content
You own your content. The photos, family names, dates, locations, and any other information you provide remain yours. Chronicle claims no ownership over your family's memories.
By uploading content to Chronicle, you grant us a limited license to store, display, and process your content solely to operate the service — for example, to render photos in your chronicle, generate narratives, or create a print-ready PDF when you order a book. This license ends when you delete your content or your account.
We will never sell, license, or share your content with third parties for advertising, AI training, or any purpose beyond what is necessary to provide you with the service. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to upload any content you share on Chronicle — including photos containing other people.
What you may not do
Chronicle is for preserving family memories. You agree not to use the service to:
- Upload content that is illegal, harmful, threatening, harassing, defamatory, or violates another person's privacy or rights
- Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or interfere with the security or integrity of Chronicle
- Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to access the service in a way that places an unreasonable burden on our infrastructure
- Create accounts on behalf of others without their knowledge, or impersonate any person or entity
- Resell, sublicense, or otherwise commercialize access to Chronicle without our written permission
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these restrictions.
Intellectual property
The Chronicle brand, logo, application design, and all original software are our intellectual property and protected by copyright, trademark, and related laws. You may not copy, reproduce, or create derivative works from our materials without prior written consent.
This does not limit your rights over content you create — your stories, your photos, and your family's memories are yours.
AI-generated content
Chronicle uses AI to help craft the narrative chapters that accompany your family's photos. The narrative text generated by this process belongs to you as part of your chronicle.
AI-generated narratives reflect the information you provide. We make no warranty that they are historically accurate, complete, or free from errors. You should review generated content and edit as needed before sharing.
We never use your submitted photos or content to train AI models. Requests to our AI providers are made under zero-data-retention agreements. See our Privacy Policy for more detail.
Disclaimers
Chronicle is provided "as is" and "as available." While we work hard to keep the service reliable and your data safe, we cannot guarantee that Chronicle will be available 100% of the time or that it will be completely free from errors.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We strongly encourage you to keep your own backups of any photos or content you consider irreplaceable. Chronicle is a preservation tool, not a primary backup solution.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Chronicle and its team shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service — including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, or service interruption.
Our total liability to you for any claim arising from or related to these terms or the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.
Some jurisdictions do not allow limitations on certain warranties or liabilities. In those cases, our liability is limited to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Termination
By you: You may delete your account at any time from your account settings. When you do, your family data, chapters, and photos are permanently and irreversibly deleted from our systems.
By us: We may suspend or terminate your account if you materially violate these terms. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you before doing so, except in cases of serious harm or abuse where immediate action is necessary.
After termination, provisions of these terms that by their nature should survive — including ownership, disclaimers, and limitation of liability — will remain in effect.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email at least 14 days before the new terms take effect. Your continued use of Chronicle after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent update. We keep prior versions available on request.
